LENOX, MASSACHUSETTS - Governor John E. Baldacci today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter to work cooperatively on renewable ocean electricity generation.

Energy Department Commits New Funding for Offshore Wind Development
AUGUSTA - Governor John E. Baldacci today welcomed news that the U.S. Department of Energy is committing $20 million to further the development of deepwater offshore wind energy development. The University of Maine’s efforts already under way to develop components and test deepwater offshore wind turbines for energy production could receive support from these funds.

Maine to Host World's Leading Ocean Energy Conference in 2011
AUGUSTA - Maine will once again host the EnergyOcean International Conference, the world's premier event focused on renewable and sustainable energy from the oceans. In June 2011, technologists, financiers and policy makers from around the world will gather in Portland to share and discuss opportunities for the market of renewable ocean-based energy.

Governor Signs Ocean Energy Legislation
AUGUSTA - Governor John E. Baldacci today signed LD 1465, An Act To Facilitate Testing and Demonstration of Renewable Ocean Energy Technology. The Governor's bill, sponsored by Senator Barry Hobbins, establishes a streamlined permit process for companies that want to test promising new renewable ocean energy technologies in appropriate sites in the Gulf of Maine. Up to five such sites will be selected by Dec. 15, 2009.

Students interested in ocean energy can attend international conference at no cost and be eligible for $200 toward classroom supplies
AUGUSTA - Teams comprised of a teacher and two high school students, who are interested in ocean energy as a renewable energy source, are invited to register for the upcoming international EnergyOcean Conference held at the Samoset Resort, Rockland in June. To encourage the study of Maine's ocean energy potential, the Environmental and Energy Technology Council of Maine (E2Tech) is offering complimentary registrations and travel reimbursement for a limited number of Teams.

In June, Maine will be host to the premiere global conference on ocean energy EnergyOcean 2009 in Rockport. In 2008, Maine competed nationally for the opportunity to host the conference through the Department of Economic and Community Development.

Governor Looks for Energy Options Off Maine Coast
AUGUSTA – Governor John E. Baldacci announced today that he will review every option for alternative energy development off the coast of Maine as a key component of achieving his goals of energy independence and security for Maine, stabilizing and ultimately reducing energy prices and averting a climate crisis. The Governor today signed An Executive Order Establishing the Ocean Energy Task Force. The 21-member panel will be charged with reporting back to the Governor on strategies for ocean-based wind energy, tidal and wave energy as well as updating information regarding offshore oil and gas resources and technology. Interim findings will be due by April 1, 2009; final recommendations will be due by October 31, 2009.
