WHO'S WHO, WHAT'S WHAT
Governor Baldacci's Maine Ocean Energy Task Force
A primary mission of the Task Force is to recommend strategies to meet or exceed the goals established in the Maine Wind Energy Act, to install at least 2,000 megawatts of wind capacity by 2015 and at least 3,000 megawatts by 2020, 300 of which could be located in coastal waters.
Northeast Energy Corridor
On March 25, 2009, Governor John Baldacci and New Brunswick Premier Shawn Graham announced that they will work together to explore the development of a Northeast Energy Corridor. The improved transmission capability, along with the potential for increased natural gas co-generation, would make it possible to develop more wind power in Maine and New Brunswick.
Ocean Energy Institute
The Ocean Energy Institute, founded by Matthew Simmons, is an independent think tank with the mission to accelerate the technological development of innovations that harness the ocean's power. With a current focus on far off-shore wind in the State of Maine, the Institute identifies emerging opportunities through deep technical, policy and business expertise, and by coordinating the efforts of businesses, policy leaders, researchers and innovators.
"The point is not only to address the Maine energy problem but to try to create thousands of jobs in what will be a new Maine renewable industry."
George Hart, Chief Technology Officer of the Ocean Energy Institute
